Picky eating is one of the most common food-related challenges for parents.
Even babies who ate anything that was offered to them grew to be toddlers who refused almost everything.
While it can be frustrating for both the parents and the picky eater, there is hope! The habit of picky eating can be overcome, over some time, by consistently providing healthy foods from all the food groups (pictured below).
In the meantime, it is comforting to know that most children have adequate diets despite a natural tendency toward pickiness.
Follow these tips to help promote the development of your little one’s taste buds:
-
Model good eating habits
Children are more likely to try foods they are uncertain about when they see Mom, Dad, and their brothers or sisters enjoying the food.
-
Offer New Foods with Familiar Foods
Children are more likely to try foods they are uncertain about when they see Mom, Dad, and their brothers or sisters enjoying the food.
-
Offer, Don’t Force
Offer small portions of new foods to children and encourage them to eat it, but don’t force them.
-
Make It Fun
Use a variety of colorful fruits and vegetables, invent (or just look up) games, or have the kids help in the kitchen.
-
Try, Try Again
Sometimes, children’s taste buds just aren’t ready for a new food. Keep trying! It can take 10 to 15 tries before a child with accept a new food, and that’s OKAY.
