We’ve all heard this before, but experts recommend that children be physically active for at least 60 minutes every day.

Incorporating active play into every day life improves sleep, increases muscle and bone strength, and promotes lifelong good health!

Having fun outside in warm weather is a great way to spend time as a family, and to get some exercise without needing to go to a gym.  Ask your children to help you think of ideas for things you can do together outside.

It doesn’t have to cost a lot—often, you can use items you already have on hand.

Fun In the Sun: Ideas

Sidewalk Chalk

Play hopscotch or draw pictures and “paint” them with water and brushes.

Go to a Playground

Check out this site for a list of Knoxville’s best & safest playgrounds.

Blow Bubbles

Chase the bubbles with your child and try to catch them!

Turn up the music

Let  your kid pick the tune & have a dance party in your back yard!

It doesn’t have to be Better Homes and Gardens quality either. Try simple flowers, strawberries, or even lettuce.

Have a Car Wash

You can wash the car while children help, or let the them wash their own wagons and toy cars.

Go on a Hike

Knoxville has an abundance of urban trails and parks that you can take your kids to.

Play Ball

Basketball, soccer, baseball/catch, you name it! This also improves motor skills.

Organize a Relay Race

See if other kids in the neighborhood want to join.

Play in the Sprinkers

Especially nice to do on hot summer days!

Walk to the Store or Library

If you live close enough to a grocery store or your public library, take a stroll to it with your children.
Added bonus: Ask the kids to help you with shopping once you get there!
